DIN 985 is the most widely recognized European industrial standard for prevailing torque type hexagon nuts with a non-metallic insert. Known for its Low Profile (Style 0) design, it provides an efficient and cost-effective locking solution for assemblies where space is limited but vibration resistance is mandatory.

While technically withdrawn and replaced by ISO 10511, DIN 985 remains the "de facto" industry standard globally, utilized in millions of applications from consumer electronics to automotive sub-assemblies due to its proven performance and universal availability.

The locking mechanism of DIN 985 relies on the Elastic Deformation of the nylon ring located at the top of the nut. As a bolt passes through the metal threads and enters the nylon collar, the polymer is compressed. This creates a high-friction radial force—referred to as Prevailing Torque—that keeps the nut secure even under fluctuating temperatures or physical shocks.
